1. Don’t study from just one source. There may be sources out there that are pretty thorough and have most of the PMP® material covered. But you will find that for the most part there are holes in every source, and picking up a second source for your study materials will insure that you have all of your bases covered. I would suggest that you have around three sources, but make the all a little different. For example, pick up an Exam Prep work book, find an online or podcast, and finally follow up with the PMBOK guide or some flash cards from a separate vendor. That should really leave no glaring holes in your study material.

2. Create a Brain-Dump sheet that has a summary of the important formulas, process associations, terms, and common inputs and outputs. There are a number of PMI-isms that are important to the tests, jotting down those important terms to “jog” your memory can make a big difference. You can’t take the Brain-Dump sheet with you to the test, but that is the core information that you need to memorize to be successful.

3. Read and understand the questions thoroughly before answering them. The PMP® questions often have a lot of unnecessary wording. It is irrelevant information designed to throw off test takers. Mentally throw out everything that is not relevant to the question. When I was having a hard time understanding what they wanted, I would start at the end of the paragraph with only the words that made up the exact question. With this in mind, I would then work through the rest of the wording.

4. When you read the question look for words such as always, never, most, and least. These types of words may help you eliminate answers that look OK, but are incorrect because you would not “ALWAYS” perform that step.

5. If you aren’t sure about an answer, eliminate the ones that you know are wrong. Now there are only,say, two of the four left to choose from. Think of where you are at in the Process Groups. Is this question about planning? Then, probably, all of the answers that have to do with executing or monitoring are not correct. Perhaps you can eliminate one more and be left with the right answer. If you can eliminate two of the four, then if you still have to guess, your guessing percentage could be 50% instead of 25%.

Know Exactly What You Have To Study For The PMP Exam

I recently received an email that made me sad. A subscriber had taken the PMP exam and was a few points below the acceptable mark. He took his results and revisited the sections that he had scored low on the exam, but he was still wary of plunking down the money to take it again. “There are going to be new questions this time, what if I score low in a different area? I just don’t know what to study!”

We all have those same concerns, how can you know what is really important, and what material you are specifically weak in? Well, before you sit for the exam, realize that each person has a different background and has prepared in different ways to take the exam. The sections of the exam that are “hard” for one person could be “a snap” for someone else. Having said that, the knowledge base for the exam is contained in A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge: (Pmbok Guide) (Paperback) version 4. However, the PMI is more concerned that you, as a project manager can apply the principles in the book, not just regurgitate them for an exam.
